When someone has soft tissue injuries such as torn joints, pulled ligaments, or muscle spasms there's a different kind of therapy used to treat those types of problems. Here at Springs Chiropractic, we utilize a form called Therapeutic Ultrasound. A therapeutic ultrasound treatment session is utilized for injuries related to most soft tissues, joints and muscle spasms. Although it shares the same name as one might think as a normal ultrasound, this type of ultrasound is not the same as that used diagnostically to screen the body internally. Everything is external and done topically on the patient's skin.
What Exactly is Therapeutic Ultrasound?
An ultrasound emits small sound waves at an extremely high frequency, out of the range of human hearing, in order to penetrate to the localized injured area. When applied to problem areas in soft tissues and joints, this treatment produces heat that helps increase blood flow and reduce inflammation, which in turn decreases pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms. Therapeutic ultrasound is known to have a very positive effect on the healing process of someone's injury, so this treatment option is used constantly here at our office.
How Exactly Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Treatment Work?
Although its effects and goals are different from typical ultrasound screening technologies, therapeutic ultrasound therapy is implemented in a very similar way. The process may be familiar if you’ve ever had an ultrasound screening in the past but is different in the outcome possibilities.
Everything in the practice of therapeutic ultrasounds here at Springs Chiropractic are entirely topical on the skin. A soft ultrasound gel is applied to your skin in order to reduce friction and allow for better transmission of the ultrasound waves, just like a normal massage. An ultrasound emitting wand or tool will be passed over the patient's skin where their pain point or injury is located. Despite the deep-tissue heat applied during your therapy session, you typically will feel little to no heat at all. Our patient's are never in any additional pain or discomfort during all of our therapeutic ultrasound sessions, or any chiropractic therapy treatments for that matter. You are in good, safe hands here.
Therapeutic ultrasounds have been known to provide patient's with exceptional healing outcomes with their ability to facilitate the body's healing process at the most basic cellular level. These treatments have a huge success rate when it comes to soft tissue injuries or pain.
