Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a non-surgical treatment option by which acoustic waves are applied to focused areas of the body to break down tissue or promote healing and repair. As a versatile regenerative medicine treatment option easily performed in office, ESWT is a noninvasive treatment that allows the patient to continue on with daily life. Springs Chiropractic is proud to offer this treatment option to our patients here in Colorado Springs. As an expert in ESWT, Dr. Knoche will walk you through the process and recovery utilizing shockwave therapy as a treatment option to keep you out of the operating room.
Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, presents as pain or tenderness on the outside of the elbow and can extend to pain radiating down the forearm. Caused by inflammation and damage to the tendons that connect your elbow and forearm muscles, tennis elbow can be brought on by repetitive strain on the tendons such as: racquet sports, desk work (typing), construction and manual labor, painting, weightlifting, and various other repetitive movement sports (baseball, golf, and swimming).
By utilizing ESWT, the shockwaves help promote healing of the tendons and overtime reduce or eliminate the pain associated with tennis elbow. Since ESWT is a non-surgical option, patients can be seen on a regular cadence prescribed by the doctor and treated in office. Treatments are often not time-consuming, allowing patients a flexible treatment schedule with no down time. Treatment usually requires multiple sessions to see the best results, but the overall treatment process is typically shorter than any surgical options.
ESWT is the transcutaneous application (applied across the skin) of high-energy acoustic waves in the targeted area of the elbow and connecting tendons. Though some patients might experience slight discomfort during treatment from the shockwaves, the process helps to speed in the recovery and reduce or eliminate pain.
If you are curious if ESWT is a good treatment option for you, we welcome you to make an appointment with Dr. Knoche to discuss this or other treatment options that can help you find relief from your tennis elbow pain.
